Accounts and transfers
Keep cash, cards and savings apart, move money between them, and fix a balance that drifted
An account is a place your money sits: a wallet, a current account, a card, a savings pot, a loan. Every movement is booked on one of them, so CaliMoney can tell you how much is in each.
Until you create a second account you won't see any of this: everything goes into Main, and the app looks exactly as before.
How to add an account
- Tap More in the bottom bar and go to Accounts.
- Tap Add account.
- Give it a name (for example Wallet) and pick its kind: Cash, Bank, Card, Savings, Investments, Property, Business or Loan.
- If the account holds another currency (a USD bank account, Swiss francs in cash), pick it in Currency. It starts on your display currency, which is what most accounts use.
- In Opening balance, type what's in it today. Use a minus sign for a loan or an overdraft (for example
-1200). - Leave As of on today, or pick the day that balance refers to — movements dated before it are already inside the opening balance.
- For a Card or Loan, you can fill in Annual interest rate % (optional) — it's used to estimate the interest in Debt payoff, where a card appears only once it has one.
- Tap Save.
You can rename Main and give it an opening balance the same way (tap it, then Edit). Leave its As of date empty to count every movement you have ever recorded.
Booking a movement on an account
Once you have two or more accounts, the Add and Edit screens show an Account field first, above the amount (for a transfer, From and To). It starts on the account you used last, so most of the time you don't touch it.
How to record a transfer
- On Add, pick Transfer as the type (it appears once you have two accounts).
- Type the amount.
- At the top of the form, choose From and To — for example Main → Wallet for a cash withdrawal.
- Add a note if you like, then save.
A transfer is one movement, shown in the list with the ⇄ icon and Main → Wallet. It is never income or spending: it doesn't count in your totals, budgets, forecast or AI answers.
Don't record a transfer as an expense plus an income — both would count, and your spending would look higher than it is.
An account's balance is what it holds today: a movement you enter ahead (rent due at the end of the month) counts once its day comes.
How to fix a balance that drifted
If an account shows a different balance from your bank or wallet, you don't need to hunt for the missing movement:
- In Settings → Accounts, tap the account, then Adjust balance.
- Type the real balance and tap Record adjustment.
CaliMoney records the difference as a balance adjustment on that account. Like a transfer, it never counts as income or spending. You can edit its amount, date and note later, or delete it.
Your home and other things you own
A home, land or a stake in a company has no balance and no money flowing through the app, but it is often most of what you own. Add it as an account of kind Property (home, land, rental) or Business (a share in a private company):
- In Estimated value, type what it would sell for today, and in As of the day of that estimate.
- When you have a new estimate, tap the account, then Update value. The field starts on the current value — type the new total, not the change, and tap Save value.
The row says when you last updated it (Updated 3 months ago); after a year it turns amber as a reminder. If the value hasn't changed, save the same figure: that still counts as an update. A value update never counts as income or spending.
These accounts never appear in the Account field on Add — nobody pays for groceries from a house. Record a mortgage as a separate Loan account: your net worth then shows the house minus the mortgage. When you sell, update the value to 0 and record the sale price as income on the account that received it.
For shares, ETFs or crypto use an Investments account and add your holdings on the Investments page.
Savings goals
Saving for a holiday, a car or a rainy-day fund? Give the account you keep that money in a goal: the balance you want it to reach, and — if you like — the day you want to get there.
- In Settings → Accounts, tap the account, then Set goal.
- In Target balance, type the balance you want the account to reach, in its currency.
- Optionally pick a date in By. Leave it empty for a goal with no deadline.
- Tap Save goal.
Goals can be set on Cash, Bank, Savings and Investments accounts (including Main) — not on cards, loans or property. To change or drop one, tap the account, then Edit goal (where you'll also find Remove goal).
Every goal appears in a Savings goals card on the dashboard, below the forecast, and on the Net worth page. For each one you see:
- a progress bar and €1,900 of €3,000 — the account's balance today against the target;
- how much the balance changed per month over the last 3 months (or since the account opened, if that's more recent) — every movement on the account counts, so spending from it slows the goal down;
- with a date, how much a month you'd need to put aside to make it, and a verdict: On track, Behind, or Date passed if the day came and went;
- when you'd get there at your current pace.
Once the balance reaches the target the goal shows Reached. With fewer than four weeks of history CaliMoney doesn't estimate a pace yet. For an Investments account the pace includes price changes, since they move its value too.
A goal is a target you set, not advice. Progress is always calculated on your device from your movements — it is never stored. In hidden mode the amounts are masked; the bar and percentage stay.
Accounts in another currency
Each account keeps its own currency, and everything recorded on it is in that currency: the Add screen labels the amount with it (Amount ($)), and the list and Settings → Accounts show its amounts and balance in it.
Transfers between two currencies. When From and To are in different currencies, the form asks two amounts: what left, and what arrived (Received (€)). Type the figures from your bank statement — CaliMoney never guesses the exchange rate for a transfer.
Totals. Your dashboard, budgets, forecast and net worth add accounts up in your display currency, so a foreign account's amounts are converted at the latest European Central Bank reference rate. Converted figures are marked ≈ and come with a note saying which day's rates were used. The rates are fetched when the app opens online, and the last ones are kept for offline use; the note turns amber if they are more than a week old.
If no rate is known yet for a currency (for example, you created the account offline), its amounts are left out of totals until the app is online once, and the net worth total waits instead of showing a partial figure. Your own amounts never leave the device to be converted — see Privacy.
Changing an account's currency later relabels what you already recorded; it does not convert it.
Filtering by account
In Movements, open Filters and pick an account: you'll see its movements and every transfer in or out of it.
Deleting an account
Tap the account, then Delete and tap again to confirm. An account that still has movements or recurring movements can't be deleted — move or delete them first. Main can't be deleted.
Offline and encryption
- Accounts, transfers and adjustments work offline and sync when you're back online.
- With encryption on, each account's name, kind, currency, opening balance and savings goal, and which account each movement is booked on, are encrypted on your device before upload.
- Balances are always calculated on your device from your movements — they are never stored.
