Shared expenses
Split costs with a partner, flatmates or a trip group — end-to-end encrypted, works offline, and nobody sees your email
A household is a shared ledger for the people you split costs with: a partner, flatmates, a group on holiday. Anyone in it records what they paid and who it was for; CaliMoney keeps a running balance for everyone and tells you who should pay whom to settle up.
Your own movements are untouched: a household is a separate ledger. You can still add your share of an expense to your movements with one tick.
Shared expenses are end-to-end encrypted between the members, so they need encryption turned on. If it is off, Shared expenses shows a link to turn it on.
Create a household
- Tap More in the bottom bar, then Shared expenses.
- Tap New household, give it a name (Flat, Lisbon trip) and the name the others will see for you.
- Tap Create. You need a connection for this step.
Invite people
- Open the household and, under People, type the person's name in Invite someone.
- Tap Create invite link, then Copy link or Share to send it to them.
The person appears in the household straight away, marked Not joined: you can already record expenses with them. The link works once, for 7 days — anyone holding it can join as that person, so send it only to them. Need a new one? Tap Invite link next to their name.
They open the link, sign in or create a CaliMoney account (with encryption on), and tap Join. A household holds up to 10 members. Your email is never shown to them, nor theirs to you.
Waiting for the household key
Right after joining, the household shows Waiting for the household key. The key that opens it is shared with the new member by another member's device, automatically, the next time that member opens CaliMoney. Ask them to open the app; nothing else to do.
Add a shared expense
- In the household, tap Add expense.
- Enter the amount and its currency, and who paid.
- Choose how to split it:
- Equally — tick the people it was for. If it does not divide exactly, the extra cent goes to one of them, the same on every phone.
- Exact amounts — type each person's share; they must add up to the total.
- Add a description, the date and, if you like, one of your categories — the others see only its name.
- Tap Save.
Adding, editing and deleting entries works offline; they sync when you are back online. Tap an entry to edit or delete it — a deletion removes it for everyone.
Add my share to my movements
When the expense is in your display currency, Also add my share to my movements (on by default) adds your share as an expense on your Main account, in the category you picked. It is a separate copy: editing or deleting the shared entry later does not change it. Settlements are never added — paying a friend back is not spending.
Balances and settling up
The Balances card shows, per currency, who is owed and who owes. Whoever paid is owed the shares of the others; each share counts against the person it was for. Below the balances, CaliMoney suggests the payments that would settle everything — the ones involving you are buttons.
When money actually changes hands, tap Settle up (or the suggested payment): enter who paid whom and how much, and Save. The balances update for everyone. CaliMoney never moves money itself.
Balances in different currencies are kept apart and never converted.
Rename, export, leave
Under Household:
- Rename changes the household's name for everyone.
- Download CSV saves every entry, with each person's share, as a spreadsheet.
- Leave household (tap twice) removes it from your devices. The entries you recorded stay, so the others' balances still add up, but nothing links them to you any more. If you are the last member, leaving deletes the household and all its entries.
Deleting your account leaves every household first.
Privacy
The household's name, its people and every entry are encrypted on a member's device before upload, with a key only the members' devices hold — neither CaliMoney nor Google can read them. Stored unencrypted, so sync works: the members' account IDs, their public keys and each entry's date. Hidden mode masks every amount and balance. More in Privacy.
