How to manage, rename, reorder and deactivate categories

Categories help you classify movements. They are organized by type: Income, Expenses and Investments. You can customize them freely.

Choosing your first categories

When you create an account, CaliMoney asks which categories to start with — right after you set your passphrase, before your first movement.

Every suggested category is already selected. Switch between Expenses, Income and Savings with the tabs at the top.

Tap a category to remove it (tap again to bring it back). Tap the pencil next to it to rename it.

Tap Add your own to create a category of the current type.

Tap Start tracking. Or tap Skip — use all to keep every suggestion as it is.

You can change everything later in Settings → Categories. The step works offline too: the categories are saved on your device right away and synced when you're back online. It is shown once per account — a second device gets the categories you already chose.

Viewing categories

Go to Settings → Categories. Use the type pills at the top to filter by type (Income / Expenses / Investments).

Adding a category

In Settings → Categories, select the desired type.

Tap Add category.

Enter the name and tap Add.

Renaming a category

Tap the category name in the list, edit the text and tap Save.

Reordering categories

Drag the handle (☰) on the right of each category to change its position. The order is reflected in the dropdown when adding a movement.

A haptic vibration confirms the start of dragging on mobile devices.

Activating / deactivating a category

The toggle next to each category enables or disables it. Deactivated categories do not appear in the add movement form, but existing movements with that category remain visible in the list.

Deleting a category

Tap the trash icon next to the category.

If the category has associated movements, you will be asked to reassign those movements to another category before proceeding.

Select the replacement category and confirm.

Deletion is permanent. Make sure to choose the correct replacement category before confirming.

Subcategories

Split a broad category without losing its total — for example Food into Groceries and Dining out. There is one level: a subcategory cannot have subcategories of its own.

Tap ⋮ on the category's row and choose Add subcategory, then type its name in the window that opens.

Type the name and press Enter. The subcategory appears indented under its parent.

  • Move under… (in the same ⋮ menu) opens a window where you pick the parent; it turns an existing category into a subcategory, or moves a subcategory to another parent. Its movements and budget come along — nothing is re-categorised. Move to top level undoes it.
  • A category that already has subcategories cannot itself move under another one.
  • Drag and drop reorders categories among their siblings: top-level with top-level, subcategories within their parent.
  • A parent can still hold movements of its own.
  • When adding a movement, the category picker shows subcategories as Food › Groceries, lists the categories you used most recently (within the past year) first when you have many, and searching "food" finds every subcategory of Food.
  • When you delete a category that has subcategories, you choose where they go: to the top level (the default) or under another category. They are never deleted with it.

Offline

Every change on this page — adding, renaming, reordering, activating, deactivating and deleting — works without a connection. It is saved on your device and synced when you are back online. A category you add offline can be used for new movements straight away.
